About the author:
With the implementation of digital technology and the rapid changes in the photography industry, digital portrait photography now requires a new set of skills that differ from those used in film photography. The way you market those skills needs to be adapted as well. Digital integration requires planning and constant education, which in turn requires time and time management.

Many photographers spend hours on the computer devouring the new technology and eventually neglect their business and their families. Often, they are so focused on being photographers, they forget they are running a business and have a difficult time understanding why they are not making a profit. This is a dangerous path to travel. Think back to the time when you were in high school. Do you remember having a subject you liked best and one you hated? If you had homework that night, you most likely completed the assignment for the subject you preferred and procrastinated when it came time to do the one you hated. As adults, we do the same thing: you may put your focus on photography or on Photoshop and neglect to consider that if so much of your business has changed (equipment, products, style of images), then your marketing efforts should change as well. As an instructor, we used to encourage our students to “do the worst first.” Today, I am just preaching “do it or delegate it!”
